Overview

Saga Dawa Festival Tours presents an opportunity to observe the amazing Saga Dawa festival and lets you discover the aptitudes of the holy Mount Kailash and travel along to the spectacular Lake Mansarovar. Saga Dawa festival excitedly and with much joviality is celebrated on the fourth Tibetan Lunar month on a full moon day, where the chanting of the prayers takes on a whole another level of pious significance. According to legend, the Saga Dawa festival is celebrated to rejoice in Lord Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and death. According to their tradition, when Lord Buddha was dying, he instructed one of his followers not to honor him merely with flowers, incense, and light after he died, but by striving to follow his teachings about living a noble life and being kind and compassionate. He urged people not to weep about his death but to remember that all compound objects like the human body must eventually disintegrate. Along with remembering Lord Buddha and his activities, the main point of the festival is to pray.

It is said by many that the goal of the festival season is to pray for the long life of all the holy gurus of all traditions, for the survival and spreading of Buddha’s teachings in the minds of all sentient beings, and the world peace. You would be able to observe the crowd that gathers in the Potala Palace during the festival. Hundreds of people lie down or stand to pray in from of the palace. You can also go to the park near the Potala Palace called the Dzongyab Lukhang Park where there usually is a large gathering of people for an outdoor picnic in the late afternoon. The Saga Dawa Festival Tours is a wonderful way to experience this festival.

We will drive to Nyalam crossing the Friendship Bridge which separates Nepal from China to begin the Saga Dawa Kailash Mansarovar tour. En route, we will pass through several villages; and with an easy drive, we will reach New Dongba. Moving ahead, the first views of the holy Mountain Kailash, as well as Lake Mansarovar, come into sight. The turquoise-blue freshwater of Mansarovar lying at a height of 4558m is recognized as the lake located at the highest altitude in the world.

We will continue our trip to attend the Saga Dawa Festival which is the major festival in the Ngari area. Here, can also observe quite a few rituals done by Buddhism, Hinduism, and Bon. The festival is celebrated to wish for the long life of teachers who preach the wisdom of Buddha and to admire the life of Buddha Shakyamuni. We will also drive to Tarboche which is the commencing point of the ‘Kailash Parikrama’.

    Everest base camp trek - Mar-Apr 2024

My 60 year old pals set out in hope on this adventure. In late March. We had our guide Raj Kumar and two porterd Janak and Ramesh. All three were stars. We changed our schedule - no problem. I would not have made it without Raj. I cannot thank him enough. Janak often took my back pack on steep climbs where I was struggling. This is a truly majestic and spiritual trek and I would encourage using Escape Himalaya and request this team of guide and porters if you want to give yourself the best chance of finishing and making best use of your time.
