On your Langtang Valley Trek, you will visit some of the iconic villages of Rasuwa district in northern Nepal. The proximity to Tibet has left its mark, as people of this region are descendants of Tibetan ancestors. Syabru Besi, the trailhead of Langtang Valley Trek, and other villages of Langtang are predominantly inhabited by Tamang and Sherpa communities.
The Langtang Trek allows you to explore Nepal’s rural areas free from the hustle-bustle of cities. The traffic-free trekking routes provide a rejuvenating leisurely trek, unlike other trekking trails like Annapurna and Everest.

Another breathtaking spot on the 10-day Langtang Valley Trek is Tsergo Ri/ Chorkari Ri. A hill with an altitude of 5,050 meters above sea level, Tsergo ri provides a stunning panorama of Langtang Himalayas and other massive peaks on Tibet’s side, such as Shishapangma (8,027 m), etc. Enjoy unobstructed views of Langtang Lirung (7,246 m), Langshisha Ri (6,370 m), Kimshung (6,781 m) and others from the summit.
Our 10-day Langtang Valley Trek trails will take you through myriad landscapes in Langtang National Park, such as dense forests, vast pasturelands, and high barren terrains. Route Overview
The Langtang Valley in Nepal’s north central Rasuwa district is a popular trekking site in Nepal. Our 10-day Langtang Valley Trek allows you to explore Langtang’s beautiful landscapes and gigantic mountains at the most comfortable pace.
The trip starts with your arrival in Nepal. The day you land at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport, our Escape Himalaya staff, bearing our company placard, will welcome you. Transferring to your hotel, you will rest and recuperate from the long flight journey.
On day two, you will leave for Syabru Besi, a Tamang village on the outskirts of Langtang National Park. The jeep ride from Kathmandu to Syabru Besi lasts around 7 hours. Driving on the Pasang Lhamu highway along the Trisuli River banks, you can enjoy the scenic views of Nepal’s rural villages and towns. Before reaching Syabru Besi, you will pass through Dhunche, the administrative headquarters of Rasuwa district. You can see the spectacular Ganesh Himal (7,422 m) in the distance.
Shyabru Besi, the gateway to Langtang National Park, also serves as a transit point for international trekkers on their way to Kailash in Tibet. From there, you will tread slowly through various villages of Langtang to reach your final destination - Kyangjin Gompa (3,870 m). Since our 10-day Langtang Valley trekking itinerary is well-paced, you will make several overnight stays to acclimate to the high altitudes.
Trekking in the Langtang valley commences with a hike to Lama Hotel (2,500m) from Shyabru Besi; the path traverses thick forests along Bhote Kosi and Langtang Khola riverbanks. Crossing over suspension bridges will give you a typical trekking experience in Nepal. Passing through smaller villages like Tiwasi, Bamboo, and Ramche, you will finally arrive at Gumanechok near Lama Hotel. It will be your first overnight stay in the Langtang National Park.
Following a similar pattern, you will trek to Mundu (3,543 m) from Lama Hotel and from Mundu to Kyanjin Gompa (3,830 m). Some of the villages on this route include Langtang village, Sindum, and Yamphu.
You will spend a day at Kyanjin Gompa visiting local attractions like the Buddhist monastery, the cheese factory, and Tsergori (5,050 m). The day hike to Tsergori and the return journey to Kyanjin Gompa takes around 14 hours, however, this is the best vantage point to get a 360º view of the spectacular Langtang Himalayas and its glaciers.
The next day, you will begin your return journey to Syabru Besi. First, you will trek to Lama Hotel from Kyanjin Gompa, which will cover a distance of 15 kilometers over 5 to 6 hours. After an overnight stay at Lama Hotel, you will descend to Shyabru Besi the following day. It takes another 5 to 6 hours hike to get there.
Having completed your 10-day Langtang Valley Trek, you will take a jeep ride back to Kathmandu via the same route. On the last day of your trip, one of our Escape Himalaya staff will transfer you to the airport (TIA).
We look forward to assisting you in your next adventure in Nepal. Hope you enjoyed your Langtang Valley Trek with us.

They are used in cold and wet climates at high altitudes( -20°C to -25°C maximum temperature), giving you protection and comfort. They are also lightweight and compact, making them easy to carry on long treks. The sleeping bag is returned after the trek, helping us maintain our gear for future adventurers.
Why Choose Langtang Valley Trek?
Langtang is one of Nepal’s most pristine valleys, and its myriad of landscapes make it perfect for remote trekking. If you are a travel enthusiast, you would not want to miss out on this destination.
Situated 130 kilometers north of Kathmandu, Langtang Valley shares its borders with Tibet, hence the majestic Langtang Himalayas and a range of glistening glaciers. Inhabited by Tamang and Sherpa ethnic communities, this region is rich culturally and historically. The beautiful Langtang village, historical Kyangjin Gompa, numerous day hike options (Kyanjin ri, Tsergo ri, and Yala peak), and the enchanting alpine landscapes attract travelers to Langtang Valley from all over the world.
Accessibility of the Langtang Valley Trek is another reason it is popular among trekkers. The Shyabru Besi trailhead is just 130 kilometers from Kathmandu; a jeep ride will take you there within 7 hours. The trails run through lush forests, open pastures, and alpine terrains, making the trek even more lively. Apart from the villages, where you can interact with the ever-welcoming locals of the region to gain insight into their lifestyles, you will also encounter rare animals like red panda, Himalayan tahr, yaks, etc.
Kyanjin Gompa, the 300-year-old Buddhist monastery, is a major attraction of our 10-day Langtang Valley Trek. You will spend a day at Kyanjin Gompa exploring the locality and then hiking to the top of Tsergo ri (5,050 m), which provides a panorama of Langtang’s majestic mountains such as Langtang Lirung (7,245 m), Langtang Ri (6,596 m), Yala Peak (5,500 m) and Shishapangma (8,027 m) on Tibet’s side.
The ideal season for Langtang Valley Trek
Due to Langtang’s high altitude, we recommend you do your Langtang trek during Spring (March, April, and May) and Autumn (September and November). You must also know that the trek is available throughout the year. Still, the weather conditions are best during spring and autumn, as ideal temperatures and a clear sky enable spectacular views.
Spring (March, April, May)
During spring, the region’s flora is in full bloom, providing perfect scenery for the trek. Temperatures are moderate, with little to no precipitation, which gives clear views. Enhanced visibility ensures crystal-clear views of the Himalayas.
On average, you can expect a maximum temperature range of 10-20º C and a minimum of 0-5º C.
Autumn (September, October, November)
Similarly, autumn is also preferable for outdoor adventures like Langtang Valley Trek. With a maximum temperature between 10-20º C, it provides a pleasant weather condition, inducing a lively atmosphere. As for minimum temperatures, you can expect anywhere between 0-5º C.
Moreover, Nepal’s two major festivals, ‘Dasain’ and ‘Tihar,’ are celebrated in autumn. If you choose this season for your Langtang Valley Trek, you can witness and participate in the celebrations.
Summer (June, July, August)
Summer in Nepal is inconvenient due to monsoon rains. The same goes for the Langtang region. Incessant rain, cloudy sky, and slippery trails make Langtang trekking in summer a rather unpleasant experience. It is also the time of the year when leach bites and landslides occur more frequently.
However, if you are looking for a more private trekking experience, the Langtang trek in summer may be ideal for you, as the trails are mostly deserted during this season. Solo trekking could be done during summer if you don’t mind the hardships.
We highly recommend you carry your essential gear if you plan to trek in Langtang during the summer. Your bags, clothes, and boots must be waterproof; you should carry quick-drying clothes and pack insect repellents, umbrellas, raincoats, etc.
As for weather conditions, maximum temperatures can range between 15-25º C, and minimum temperatures will fall between 5-10º C.
Winter (December, January, February)
Langtang receives heavy snowfall during winter, which drops the temperature to as low as -20º C. Even during the day, maximum temperatures reach just between 0-10º C. Winter’s unbearable weather conditions prompt the locals running the teahouses to relocate to warmer places. As such, accommodation options decrease accordingly.
If you still want to undertake your Langtang Valley Trek during winter, we suggest you do it in early winter, as it is preferable. Since the temperature will not be as extreme as it is during peak winter, with the help of proper gear, you can still have a pleasant trek. Pack your thermal layers with insulated boots, down jackets, fleece-lined pants, gloves, scarves, woolen socks, hats, etc.
Another perk of trekking in Langtang Valley during early winter is that the trails are less crowded, and teahouse accommodation is readily available.
Transportation between Kathmandu and Langtang Valley
The time taken to reach Shyabru Besi (gateway to Langtang Valley) from Kathmandu is 7-8 hours. You can take a jeep or take a public bus to get there. You will find beautiful villages, gushing Trisuli River, and many other local attractions on the way. You will take the Pasang Lhamu Highway to get to Shyabru Besi.
Trekking Permits for Langtang Valley
You will need two permits for your Langtang Valley Trek. They are:
TIMS Card: TIMS stands for Trekkers’ information management system. It is implemented for trekkers’ safety on the trails. Get the card by filling out a form and paying a fee at the Tourism Board.
Langtang National Park Entry Permit: You will get this permit from Langtang National Park’s entrance.
To obtain these permits, you must provide a copy of your passport, travel insurance information, emergency contact numbers (a Nepal mobile number and the contact number in your home country), trip itinerary, and entry/access points.
If you want to avoid the hassle of obtaining these permits, we suggest you book your Langtang trip with us. We at Escape Himalaya take care of all the necessary documents for the journey to ensure a smooth trek experience for our guests.
Solo Trek to Langtang Valley
Planning a solo trip to Langtang Valley? We can provide a licensed guide and a porter to make your trek more secure and enjoyable. Let our staff ensure your safety and handle other trek logistics.
Or you can also opt for a group trek with us. We keep our groups small so that we can give personal attention to each group member. Traveling in a group reduces the trip’s overall cost and provides an opportunity to make new friends.
Money for Langtang Valley Trek
You must carry local currency for expenses on your Langtang Valley Trek, as ATMs are not readily available in Langtang. You will find many money exchange booths in Thamel to get Nepalese currencies in exchange for your country’s currency.
Another option to obtain local currency is to make withdrawals at the ATMs. All ATMs here accept debit cards such as Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, American Express, Diners Club, etc. You can make a daily withdrawal of around 30-50 thousand rupees.
On the trek, you will pay for drinking water, snacks, hot showers, internet access, etc. We recommend you carry enough cash with you and preferably allocate a daily budget of around 2,500 rupees per person. As for tips (tipping is expected as a gesture of appreciation), you can tip your guide and porter at the end of your trek.
Yak Cheese in Langtang Valley
Langtang Valley is known for its cheese production. It produces various cheeses, among which the most popular is the Swiss-style cheese made from yak milk. The famous yak-cheese factory at Kynjin Gompa, which Werner Schulthess established in the 1950s, first introduced the Swiss cheese-making technique to Langtang’s locals. Since then, this highly valued cheese has become a popular delicacy in Nepal.
Other cheeses available in the region are made from milks of cow, goat, and sheep. The taste and texture of these cheeses differ from the Swiss-style yak cheese, but they are equally popular among locals.
Langtan’s cheese productions contribute to cultural preservation and encourage its farming systems.
Langtang Valley Route And Culture
Langtang Valley is known for its scenic beauty, landscapes, rich culture, and majestic mountains. Our 10-day Langtang Valley Trek route takes you through lush green forests, alpine pastures where you can see herds of yaks grazing, arid terrains as you move up to higher elevations, and serene lakes and glaciers.
You will take a jeep ride from Kathmandu to Shyabru Besi, the Tamang village. It is the gateway to Langtang Valley Treks. The trek starts from Shyabru Besi and leads you through prominent stops on the trails, such as Lama Hotel (2,500 m), Mundu (3,543 m), and Kyanjin Gompa (3,830 m). After Kyanjin Gompa, you will have a day trek to and from Tsergo Ri, which is the vantage point from which to view Langtang’s snowy peaks.
As for cultural exposure, Langtang is home to Nepal’s Tamang and Sherpa ethnic groups. On the way to Kyanjin Gompa, you will pass through many villages where you can observe and interact with the locals. Doing so will allow you to learn about their lifestyles, cultures, and traditions.
Since these ethnic groups are predominantly Buddhists, you will find many stupas, monasteries, mani-walls, prayer flags, etc, on your trails. Also, on your excursions around the villages, you may see them doing their rituals or observing festivals. All in all, the cultural exposure will make your trek even more meaningful and may add to the overall experience of the trip.
Maximum height of Langtang Valley Trip
Our 10-day Langtang Valley trek’s highest point is Tsergo Ri, with an altitude of 5,050 meters above sea level. After reaching Kyangjin Gompa (3,830 m), you will spend the following day hiking to and from Tsergo Ri, giving you an even better view of Langtang Lirung, Shishapangma, and other snowy peaks.
FAQS
How difficult is the Langtang Valley Trek? Is this good for beginners?
Langtang Valley Trek falls under moderate-level trekking in terms of difficulty level. It is one of the easier Himalayan treks of Nepal. With proper acclimatization and guidance, it is doable, even for first-time trekkers.
There are, however, a few things that need to be followed diligently. First, since Langtang’s high altitude poses possible challenges, you must do some stamina-building exercises for at least a few months before the trek. You must have a good fitness level to complete your Langtang trek successfully.
Secondly, as the trails are generally 3000 meters and above, you should gradually ascend and acclimatize to avoid altitude sickness. Our guide will regularly monitor your physical health to ensure your safety.
Thirdly, you must hydrate yourself adequately throughout the trek to maintain your health and energy.
How to prepare for Langtang Valley Trek?
First, you will have to build good stamina to complete the trek without difficulty. You can do exercises like walking, cycling, running, etc. It would help if you do these cardio exercises and strength training exercises for at least a month or two before the trek.
As for packing the essentials for the trip, we recommend you buy quality gear, like a pair of sturdy trekking shoes, trekking bags, suitable clothing depending on the season, a first-aid kit, etc.
Before embarking on the trek, make sure you research the routes properly. Follow safety protocols and obtain the permits beforehand (if you book your trip with us, we will take care of your permits). Escape Himalaya can arrange licensed and well-experienced guides if you want professional guides. Lastly, let yourself acclimate to high altitudes properly. It can save you from developing altitude sickness.
Note: If you are a first-time trekker, we recommend you do shorter hikes carrying your backpack. Doing this will give you an idea about the upcoming trek and your fitness level.
Was the Langtang region affected by the 2015 earthquake?
Yes, the 8.1 magnitude earthquake that struck Nepal in 2015 left a massive devastation in its wake. Langtang village was destroyed; it was rebuilt later with better infrastructure. You can see the resilience of the local communities in the newly built villages and their determination to move on from such a grave disaster.
What type of transportation do you provide?
The route from Kathmandu to Shyabru Besi is not fully pitched, so deluxe tourist buses are unavailable. Some public buses connect these two destinations; if you want to experience a local mode of commute, this option will work for you.
Generally, most trekkers travel to Syabru Besi by jeep. A jeep ride may be more expensive than a local bus fare, but is more comfortable and quicker. You can share the jeep with other people going to Shyabru Besi; this way, you will just have to pay your fee instead of reserving the jeep yourself.
Note: if you book your Langtang Valley Trek with us, we will arrange the transportation for you. Also, our package includes pick up and drop off from the airport and your hotel.
What is the accommodation like during the Langtang Nepal trek?
The remote regions in Nepal are known for their teahouses. They are mostly run by local families, who have been serving trekkers for years with cozy resting places and sumptuous meals.
Teahouses are basic accommodations; they generally have shared bathrooms, twin beds with blankets and pillows, and a warm dining hall where you can rest and have meals after the day’s trek.
The facilities of teahouses vary depending on their location and elevation. Generally, lower regions will have better facilities such as attached bathrooms, hot showers, etc. While those on the higher altitudes may not have these facilities, you can expect basic amenities, like a warm bed and food, common charging points for your devices (you may need to pay a fee for charging), Wi-Fi, etc.
Note: Our 10-day Langtang Valley Trek package has 3-star accommodations in Kathmandu. While on the trek, our guide will arrange the best accommodation available during your trek. It could be a teahouse or a lodge.
If you want to upgrade to a 5-star hotel in Kathmandu, please let us know beforehand, and we can arrange it for you at an additional cost.
What about food and drinking water during the Langtang trip package?
You can expect decent meals and beverages on your 10-day Langtang Valley Trek. Although there are various meal options, you will find the staple - dal-bhat, at all the teahouses. Dal-bhat is a meal set consisting of rice, lentil soup, stir-fried seasonal vegetables, and pickles. It is a well-balanced diet and the best option for trekkers who need nutritious meals for a constant energy supply.
Other meal options include momo, noodles, egg, roti (flat bread), soup, etc. You can also have hot beverages like tea, coffee, and other alternative drinks.
As for drinking water, it is best to carry purifying tablets like Ef-chor, Aquatabs, etc, to purify stream and tap waters for consumption. Bottled water is also available but is expensive on the trails. You can invest in bottles with filters attached, such as LifeStraw.
You can have meals prepared with fresh seasonal vegetables on the trails. The menu at these teahouses has many food options, including Western and Tibetan meals. If you have any dietary restrictions, you can inform your guide and the cook to prepare the food of your choice while placing your order.
Note: Since our Langtang Trek package includes meals on the trek, we will provide you with breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Choose any meal from the menu and it will be served.
Will I get to have hot showers during the trek?
You can have hot showers on your Langtang trek, but you must pay for it. The lower region teahouses generally have western-style bathrooms with hot water. As you move to higher altitudes, you will not get running showers, but they provide buckets filled with hot water for showers.
Note: The teahouses charge around 2-4 USD for hot showers. The fee may increase as you move to higher-altitude teahouses.
What is the condition of the toilets at Langtang Village trek?
Like other amenities of Langtang teahouses, the toilets on the trail are also basic. Some of the teahouses have Western-style flush toilets, while others have Indian-style squat toilets. You might have to use toilets separately built outside the main building in higher places.
You must be prepared to share toilets with other trekkers at the mountain teahouses, as there are no private bathrooms. Even though common toilets may be inconvenient for you, you can rest assured as they are clean and in good condition.
We recommend you carry your toiletries as the teahouses do not provide them. Pack some wet wipes, hand sanitizers, toilet paper, soaps etc.
Can I get a private room during the trek?
Private rooms are available at some places, but the lodges on high mountain terrains will have dormitory-type rooms only, so you may need to share lodgings in such areas. We will arrange private rooms for you if and when private rooms are available. However, you must be prepared to share rooms with no private room facilities at the lodges.
Private rooms may be more expensive when compared to twin rooms, and they may not be readily available during peak trekking seasons. Also, you may need to share dormitory rooms with fellow trekkers at higher places, even if you have signed up for a private trek or are on solo travel.
Do I need travel insurance for Langtang Trek?
Buying travel insurance for your Langtang Trek is a good idea. It will cover you in emergencies like accidents or if you need immediate helicopter evacuation.

This trek has no acclimatization day; isn’t altitude sickness a risk?
Our 10-day Langtang Valley Trekking Itinerary has a comfortable pace, so it will neither hinder your trek experience nor make you prone to altitude sickness, even though it has no separate acclimatization day. With a good physical fitness level, you can efficiently complete this trek.
Moreover, we have an extra day at Kyanjin Gompa, allowing you to acclimate to the high altitude. Our guide and porter will be with you, assisting on these high terrains, so you can rest assured and enjoy your trip. Please ensure you ascend comfortably and do not forget to hydrate yourself.
What if I get sick in the mountains?
We are fully prepared to deal with mishaps on the trek, such as trekkers falling sick in the mountains or getting injured. There are two possible solutions in such cases. First, suppose you are on a private trip. In that case, our guide will assess your physical health, and either helps you descend to a lower level and wait for you to get better before resuming the trip or will immediately evacuate you by helicopter, depending on the severity of your illness.
Secondly, suppose you are traveling with at least four trekkers. In that case, the assistant guide will assist you and arrange an immediate evacuation, while the leading guide will proceed with the rest of the trekkers. Whether you can resume the trek or not will depend on your health condition. We suggest you discuss it with your guide.
Can I extend the whole trek?
You can extend your trek if you have booked a private trip. On the other hand, if you have signed up for a group trekking, you will have to stick to the pre-planned itinerary.
If you want to extend your trek, discuss it with your guide. He will contact us at our main office and inform us about changes that need to be made to extend the trek. We will then make the required arrangements for you to extend your trek.
With private booking, you can customize your trip itinerary to include your preferred destinations and the days you may want to spend at each place. The package cost will be levied accordingly.
What do I do with stuff I don’t need in the mountains?

12th Jul 2024Trekking to Langtang Valley
Read more +An amazing multi-day trekking trip with a strong guide friend, Nabraj Thapa. As usual, he was calm all the way up and down, even when I kept coming up with crazy ideas of hiking two peaks in row of two days. That was not even part of offered plan, and I was supposed to hike one peak only. But Nabraj was amazing and helped me to climb both peaks.
I will highly recommend this company to anyone who wishes to trek hike in Nepal. They are simply amazing in organizing everything from airport pickup to full trekking arrangements. All I had to do was bring myself to Kathmandu; the rest was a smooth sail.Steven P
